Ode
to the Earth
1994,
Limited Edition of 12, Height: 38cm
When
I was younger, I used to find the body of a pregnant woman quite
unesthetic, almost unnatural .
One day I found this little piece of bark which looked like a curled
up fetus. I put it on a piece of paper and starting drawing. Around
the curled piece of bard grew the shape of a belly protecting it
and a dancing woman celebrating her fecondity. Today, I find the
shape of the swollen tummy actually very sexy. The fact that this
woman is represented while dancing is important to me as most of
the time they are represented still... I like
the energy
in them and this is why I called it "Ode to the earth".
It symbolizes the ancient entertwined powers of womanhood and nature
in pagan times.
